Vilkovo
Vilkovo, a place where waters of Danube and Black Sea merge, is a pearl of Danube low reaches, often called as "the Ukrainian Venice".
It is located directly at the sea on border with Romania. The town was founded in 1746, and the old part of it is on water thanks to a number of channels excavated inside its territory — the reason why boating is a more common method of transport than an automobile. The main transport is Ukrainian “gondolas” which are made here, in Vilkovo, and one sail standing on the stern with a pole. You float, and around - bleached pure small houses, the small kitchen gardens fertilised by silt, wooden layings on the shores of channels of 1-2 meters. Not fixed on top wooden bridges are thrown through channels, thus if a boat with bulky goods passes the channel, bridge is lifted up and then put into place. The administration of the Ukrainain Danube Biosphere Reserve (participant of UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites) is based in Vilkovo. The territory of the Reserve includes the islands upstream and downstream the Danube, reedbeds to north from Danube, delta water bodies and adjacent area of the sea.
