Sevastopol
The Panorama “Defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855” is a world known masterpiece of battle painting and a monument to heroic deeds of the defenders of Sevastopol during Crimean war 1853-1856.
This war between Russia and the coalition of states – England, France, Turkey and the Kingdom of Sardinia was a result of political and economic struggle for repartition of spheres of influence in Europe, Near and Middle East. The war ended with the defeat of Russia, but 349-days long protection of the main sea fortress of the Black Sea – Sevastopol – has admired the whole world because of the courage of its defenders. The heroism of the Sevastopol defenders reflected in many monuments, the best of which is Panorama. It was created for 50-year anniversary of the event. The author of the Panorama is Franz Rubo (1856-1928), the famous artist, the founder of Russian school of panoramic art and battle painting.Other excursions
