Kyiv

St. Sophia’s Cathedral takes a leading place among all monuments and sights in Kyiv.

The Cathedral was planned as the main temple of the Kyivan Rus and was erected in the center of old Kyiv at the first half of XI cent. Initially the Cathedral was built in Byzantine style, had pyramidal structure with 13 domes. After the reconstruction in 1688 the Cathedral got its baroque view. In the XVII cent. St. Sophia houses male monastery (till 1786) and was the residence of Kyivan metropolitans.
Modern museum includes:
St. Sophia Cathedral (1037), bell tower (1699 – 1706), Metropolitan house (1722 - 1730), Refectory church (1722 – 1730), monks’ house (middle of XVIII cent.), seminary (1763-1767), bakery (1722 – 1730), southern entrance tower (beginning of XVIII cent.), Zaborovski gate (1764)
Nowadays the museum is proud for 260 m2 of original mosaic and more than 3000 m2 of original frescos of XI cent.
