You will hardly find a town that has changed its name so many times during its long history.

At different periods it was called Tyra, Akkerman, Moncastro, Ak-Dido. Belgorod-Dnestrovsky means “the White City at the Dniester river”, because the town was constructed with white stone, which was also used for the monumental fortress, built on the right bank of the river and is considered to be the oldest in Odessa region.
In those times the fortress presents mighty military defensive works, with constant armed garrison, provided with all necessary for a long siege. The fortress is interesting as architectural construction and has a complex structure – it is erected on a high rocky coast of Dnestrovsky estuary, from three other sides surrounded by a deep moat.
Nowadays the fortress is one of the best preserved architectural monuments of the Middle Ages and is protected by state.

Note: The fortress is located on a huge territory, thus we recommend footwear convenient for long walking. The trip includes lunch in one of the restaurants on the bank of Dnestrovsky estuary.
